Butte College to Host Open House for Expanded Basic Needs Resource Center

Butte College is excited to announce the expansion and relocation of the Roadrunner Hub Basic Needs Resource Center. The Roadrunner Hub will host an open house on Tuesday, March 28, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to showcase the new facility and welcome students into the center.

The Hub was established in 2018 as a food pantry to meet the needs of students facing food insecurity but soon expanded its scope of services to meet the needs of students facing housing insecurity and other emergencies. The Roadrunner Hub became an integral part of the college's efforts to meet the needs of its students in the aftermath of the Camp Fire and during the pandemic.

In response to a new state policy, Butte College consolidated all of its basic needs resources under the direction of a basic needs coordinator in the fall of 2022. Shortly after, it relocated the center from an instructional portable to its new central location with other student services centers. The expanded Roadrunner Hub Basic Needs Resource Center provides access to food, housing assistance, hygiene items and mental health support. The Hub serves approximately 225 students each month.

"It is difficult for students to be successful if they are hungry or unsure of where they will sleep," said Maisue Thao, Butte College's basic needs coordinator. "Food and housing insecurity can lead to lowered academic performance, poor attendance and reduced persistence among students. The Hub helps mitigate these needs so students can persist on their educational paths."

"We are excited to be able to expand our basic needs resources for our students," said Butte College Superintendent/President Virginia L. Guleff. "We recognize that many of our students are facing significant challenges outside of the classroom, and we are committed to doing everything we can to support them."

The open house on March 28 will feature tours of the new facility, free lunch, opportunities to meet with staff, community resources, prizes, giveaways and refreshments. All members of the community are welcome to attend. For more information about the Roadrunner Hub or the open house, please visit the zo23.com/hub or contact the Hub at (530) 895-2978.
